  Rod,s Permaculture
I am currently working with Farmers up Roeburndale to develop and implement Farm Flood plans. This is supported by the Water Environment Grant through the Lune Rivers Trust.
We now have a guided Natural Flood Management walk on the farm which you can visit at any time. Connect to walk
This exciting work complements the previous work on the historical flood events on the River Roeburn funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
For details of both projects and details on Natural Flood Management.

I have been exploring the effects of rocks in rivers.  See video below for an explanation of how they alter the river flow.

Groins and erosion on River Lune and River Kent
as a result of Flood Desmond. (Draft copy)

Flood Desmond damaged the ford and river bank at Backsbottom Farm on the River Roeburn.
The attached video shows the work I have put in with rocks as micro groins and vanes to protect and build up the bank near the restored ford.

Newton Beck Project
A recently completed project in Lancaster on Newton Beck for the Lune Rivers Trust.
We have built 3 checkdams to help slow the flow and beside the bottom dam there is an overflow for peak flood water. This leads via a meandering path into an attenuation area that will hold the peak flood water and let it flow slowly back to the main stream via 3 6inch corrugated pipes. This helps spread the peak of the flood over time, reducing the likelihood of Caton Road flooding. The bottom check dam was originally designed as a beaver analogue dam. Unfortunately it had to be altered to a more conventional check dam. The sides of this are built with living willow which will provide replacement material in the future.
